Abstract
The Antarctic cruises of population estimation of minke whale, Balaenoptera acutorostrata carried out on the whaling management areas VI (l20ºW.-170ºW.) and IV (70ºE.-130ºE.) are described. The cruises were performed during the austral summers of 1984 and 1985 respectively, in the context of the program, International Whaling Comission/International Decade for Cetacean Research (IWC/IDCR). The cetological surveys were carried out by scientists of eight countries, under guideline of the Scientific Committee of IWC and the participation of four vessels in each opportunity, supplied by the governments of Japan and the USSR. In the present paper the metodologies used on board are described and some general results are given. The importance of these surveys for our national maritime interest is discused.
