Abstract
El último confín del continente Sudamericano, archipiélago Diego Ramírez, fue visitado durante una expedición (1980-81) con el objeto de obtener nueva información sobre su historia natural prospectada en pocas visitas breves previas, estimar poblaciones aviares y establecer su
situación biogeográfica en el contexto neotropical y subantártico. Las islas del archipiélago fueron recorridas todas a pie y circunnavegadas en bote inflable, contabilizando aves y colectando especies de interés. Se entrega información meteorológica, edáfica, vegetacional, geológica, de invertebrados y vertebrados, analizando especialmente la ornitología. Las especies de aves son fundamentalmente de origen continental magallánico, sin embargo en proporción numérica y biomasa, esta es gravitantemente subantártica. Se discute esto en relación con los antecedentes conocidos para el sector oceánico magallánico, islas aledañas e islas subantárticas. Se enfatiza la importancia de su biodiversidad y endemismo, como así también la necesidad de incorporar dichas islas al SNASPE y monitoreo mediante investigación.
The final results of the project 'Ornithological community of Diego Ramírez archipelago' carried out during a 76 day expedition from December to February 1980/81 is presented. These islands represent the southern end of Southamerica (and the Neotropics), and ecological research was performed on the fields of orrlithology, marine mammalogy and invertebrate zoology, as well as terrestrial entomology , botany, geology and meteorology. This with the aim to increase knowledge on the area surveyed, to asses bird species (numbers and biomass) and relate these topics biogeographically. This small archipelago is occupied by subantarctic ornithofauna which also stretches biogeographically with some community differences, north along the outermost fringe of the vast south-chilean archipelagos, as shown recently by other austral ornithological research, thus contributing with changes to the previous established zoogeographical knowledge of that region.
