Probablemente, la década de 1920 es una de las menos abordadas en el estudio de las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y América Latina, cuestión que ha motivado diversas generalizaciones e ideas equivocadas sobre dicho periodo. En este sentido, el presente trabajo pretende ahondar en el accionar estadounidense hacia Sudamérica, especialmente durante el gobierno de Herbert C. Hoover, sugiriendo que, para la época, el país del Norte intentó extender y fortalecer su influencia entre Panamá y el Polo Sur, región de Washington pudo haber entendido como un "vacío". Asímismo, se analizan las motivaciones de este accionar, sus caracteristicas y resultados, especialmente en el contexto de la Gran Depresión Económica. Las fuentes utilizadas corresponden principalmente a bibliografía especializada (anglosajona y en español) y material de prensa nacional y regional.
Probably, the 1920's is one of the mostunknown periods in the study of the United States - Latin America relations. As a result of this, there are many generalizations and misconceptions about this age. In this sense, this article analyzes the United States actions to South America - especially during Herbert C. Hoover's administration- suggesting that, in this period, United States intended to extend and enforce its influence between Panama and the South Pole, region that probably was assumed by Washington like an "empty space" (vacuum). Motivations of these actions, its features and results - especially in the context of the "Great Depression" are also analized. The sources used include specialized bibliography and records of national and regional press.
